ABOUT EL AZAFRAN COFFEE

This coffee originates from the El Azafran farm in the village of Sport Piura, Jaen province, Cajamarca – the third largest coffee region in northern Peru. The region is entirely composed of the Andes mountain range. High altitudes, lush jungles, and fertile soil create ideal conditions for coffee cultivation. The average temperature here is 24°C.
El Azafran is owned by second-generation coffee producer Sergio Chinguel. On the family plantation spanning 3 hectares, he cultivates varieties of Caturra and Bourbon. Despite the lack of a formal certification, Sergio utilizes organic fertilizers and refrains from using any agrochemicals. He has planted many shade trees on the plantation, some of which are leguminous, providing a natural source of nitrogen in the soil. Sergio and his family work the land together, following the ancient local tradition of Ayni, which involves a system of mutual aid. For example, one day Sergio may help his brothers harvest on their farm, and in return, his brother will reciprocate by working on Sergio’s farm. This approach to work and agriculture is typical among small-scale farmers in Peru.
